There are different ways to trap the base of the brooch securely.
Use syringe to decorate over the base – works best on top of a dry clay
Cut out a small shape of thin clay and use paste to secure the base between this and the clay – can be done on top of a dry or moist clay. The shape can be applied to keep a sharp look, or wet which will let it shape around the base.
Simply push the base into the wet or soft clay, smudge the clay closed over the opening, and if needed, fill gaps with paste.
Remember measure where to put the two bases, to make sure the pin can reach across.
Once the piece is fired, fit the pin into the holder, and squeeze it shut using pliers.
